An expert in
contemporary art, printmaking, digital art, papermaking, and installation
art, Sodervick is director of Extended Studies in the College of Imaging Arts
& Sciences, Rochester Institute of Technology. She is the coordinator for
Gallery r, the RIT student-run, metro art gallery; coordinates the Deans'
Gallery for alumni work; and is a member of the Print Club of Rochester Board.
As a professional
artist, Sodervick's work addresses issues on environmental space and boundaries
with handmade paper installations and prints.
Deer management
concerns are Sodervick's primary source for addressing environmental,
political, and sociological issues.
The artist notes,
"Migration and ancient life patterns are disrupted by the imposition of
barriers, boundaries, and ever-encroaching man-made perimeters. Borders
delineate, yet simultaneously threaten, those who cross beyond these landmarks.
Sodervick's reactive perceptions are expressed through shapes, textures, and
layered manipulations. Multiple pictorial spaces speak of remembered and real
events and landscapes. Select objects are juxtaposed and orchestrated within
these fabricated environments to create intentional narrative abstractions.
"Sodervick's
approach to printmaking involves viscosity techniques and rearrangement of
movable collagraph plates for expressive intent. This unique approach evolves from
an extensive history of traditional and contemporary printmaking.
"In addition to
more traditional works, Sodervick creates imaginative narration through digital
image making. Prints are first created as collages: scanned,
transfigured, then completed in Adobe Photoshop. Resulting from these efforts,
the art emerges as provocative, visual Sodervick stories of human concern."
Sodervick earned
her bachelor's degree in fine arts from the University of Nebraska, her
master's degree in fine arts at the Pratt Institute, and completed post-grad
studies at the University of Hawaii.
The exhibit will
