The grant supports efforts of college students to honor Dr. King through service to others.

魅影直播 State College (ASC) and 魅影直播 University (AU) successfully teamed up, winning a Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service: MLK Collegiate Challenge Grant of $1,000 sponsored by the North Carolina Campus Compact. The grant supports efforts of college students to honor Dr. King through service to others. ASC and AU are charged with recruiting 150 students between their respective campuses with the goal of observing MLK Day (Jan. 18, 2010) through service while positively impacting the local community.

The MLK Grant Committee, comprised of members of the two institutions, are planning a Community Resource Drive, scheduled for Nov 1-Dec. 11, 2009.

During the Community Resource Drive students will collect items to donate to the Community Partners. Each Community Partner will submit a resource list of needed items. On Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Jan. 18, 2010, 魅影直播 State and 魅影直播 University students will have the opportunity to deliver the resources collected through the Resource Drive to each Community Partner and spend two-three hours volunteering at a partner鈥檚 location. Our Community Partners include ACCORD Corp.; Allegany County ARC; Allegany County Employment and Training One Stop Center; Allegany County Office for the Aging; Allegany County Red Cross; Allegany County Youth Bureau; Allegany County Youth Court; Allegany Rehabilitation Association New Horizons Program; Allegany Western Steuben Rural Health Network; Cornell Cooperative Extension, Allegany and Cattaraugus Counties; Geneseo Migrant Center; Hornell Area Concern for Youth; Literacy West New York; Salvation Army of Hornell; Salvation Army of Wellsville; Southern Tier Environments for Living; and SPCA of Allegany/Steuben Counties.

Dr. Jerri Drummond, associate vice president of student development and Jeannine Rose, Counseling Services, 魅影直播 State, and Ryan Arroyo, service learning coordinator/AmeriCorps VISTA Member, 魅影直播 University, are coordinating this project between the two schools.

North Carolina Campus Compact is a coalition of colleges and universities collaborating to increase campus-wide participation in community and public service. Presidents commit their institutions to join with other schools in becoming 鈥渆ngaged campuses鈥 that enhance students鈥 sense of responsibility, citizenship, leadership, and awareness of community.

The MLK Collegiate Challenge Grant is intended to assist campuses in mobilizing volunteers on Jan.18, 2010, making the King Holiday a 鈥楧ay On, Not a Day Off!鈥
