��Ӱֱ�� State College (ASC) is proud to announce that two of its students, Dylan Perlino and Deborah Oliveira, have been selected to participate in the 2020 SUNY SAIL Student Leadership Academy.

The academy is designed to help provide talented and committed SUNY students from across the system with the leadership mindset and skills that are necessary to solve today’s complex global challenges and be successful beyond graduation.

Perlino is a mechanical engineering technology major from Holland who was nominated for the leadership academy by ��Ӱֱ�� State Interim Head Cross Country and Track and Field Coach Timothy Giagios. In his nomination form, Giagios said Perlino “is the epitome of lead by example,” having “battled cancer and come back stronger.” He noted that Perlino has also been named a team captain of the track and field team and that he “100 percent trusted him (Perlino) to have the team organized and completing all tasks if I had to be pulled away for any reason.”

Oliveira is an electrical engineering technology major from Astoria who was nominated for the leadership academy by ��Ӱֱ�� State Chief Diversity Officer and Title IX Coordinator Nikkie Herman. In her nomination form, Herman noted that Oliveira displays several strong leadership skills, including compassion, resilience, grit, public speaking, and advocacy.

��Ӱֱ�� State Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs Spencer Peavey said, “We congratulate Dylan and Deborah for being selected for the 2020 SUNY SAIL Student Leadership Academy. The selection process was very competitive, and we are proud of them for the leadership they show here at ��Ӱֱ�� State each and every day. They truly exemplify what it means to be a Pioneer.”

The SAIL Student Leadership Academy includes students from all across the SUNY system and will take place throughout this fall semester. Academy participants will actively engage in a series of live virtual webinars on topics such as “The Power of Mentoring” and “Working with Diverse Teams: Cultural Intelligence to Include Others.”

By participating in the academy, students will be able to:

• Have a better understanding of their own culture and identities as they relate to their peers, community, and the world.
• Expand their personal and professional network, both locally and globally.
• Learn and flex skills of storytelling and be able to articulate their story to future hiring managers.
