魅影直播 State will serve as a host of Douglass Day activities for the third straight year. Douglass Day occurs annually on February 14, the birthday chosen by Frederick Douglass, to create new and freely available resources for learning about Black History.

The transcribe-a-thon will take place in the Hinkle Library Classroom between Noon and 3 p.m. Participants can stop in any time to watch the live , read Douglass Day resources, check out voter materials, join in on the transcription efforts, and eat cake.

Director of Global Engagement and Civic Wellbeing Cyan Corwine hopes that this event will be eye-opening to both students on campus and others in the surrounding community. 鈥淲hether a person can stay fifteen minutes or can stay the whole time, I hope participants come across works, quotes, and moments that are inspiring and lead to future curiosity. As in past years, 魅影直播 State culinary arts students have joined in on the celebration of Douglass Day. After doing research students in the baking program designed cakes that will be available to enjoy not only at Hinkle Library but at the David Howe Public Library (Wellsville), 魅影直播 Box of Books Library, and Friendship Free Library. The cakes will also be entered into a national Douglass Day Bake-off.

Mary Kienenberger (Elmira, NY) is one of the students that designed a cake with the Douglass quote 鈥淔reedom is a road seldom traveled by the multitude.鈥  

鈥淚 did some research into the life of Frederick Douglass. He was an advocate for Black Freedom, so I chose the colors of Black Freedom month, and I wanted it to look like a book because he did a lot of writing.鈥

Douglass, who was a prominent resident of Rochester, NY from 1847 to 1872, was a social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. After escaping from slavery in Maryland, he became a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York, becoming famous for his oratory and incisive antislavery writings.
