Jennifer Chiaino, a dispatcher at University Police, and Alan Vlakancic, an assistant professor in the Architecture and Design Department were the recipients of the Leadership through Civic Engagement award.

The award is given annually by the College Council and are presented to acknowledge students, faculty, and staff who have led or initiated exemplary academic and/or co-curricular initiatives that demonstrate a commitment to engaging in the community, locally, nationally, or globally, through service, volunteerism, activism, politics, and much more.

Chiaino has actively given her time and effort to both the college and local community. She has dedicated significant time to supporting the college and community food pantry, has provided personal supplies to domestic violence victims, and is a consistent volunteer at the University Police’s annual day of work in support of Camp Good Days as they prepare for the children camping season at Keuka Lake.

Jennifer also befriended and stayed in touch with a student that after they were assaulted last year. She invited them to the Police headquarters to show them how the cameras work and set up dinner with the officers.

Vlakancic has been on the leading edge of incorporating civic engagement projects into the classroom. He is very active in the Southern Tier Architectural Resource center which provides architectural services for under-resourced local communities.

In the classroom, he exhibits teaching excellence and regularly teaching more hours than are required. While team-teaching in Design Studio 5 – Urban Design he has been an active contributor to the Architectural Experience Program at Corning-Painted Post High School. He is also the Designer-in-Residence at the RETI Center in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
