As Vice President, I am responsible for authoring the college’s new associate and baccalaureate program proposals, and am responsible for expediting approval of these programs by System Administration and State Education Department.

Provide leadership for academic programs in computing information technology, accounting, business administration, electrical, mechanical, civil, and architectural engineering technology as well as engineering science, and computer art and design. Responsible for overseeing the approximately $10 million rehabilitation of the Engineering Technology Building; and organizingacademic programs commensurate with the needs of business and industry in Western New York. Provide leadership, guidance, and support of faculty and staff and coordinate student recruitment and graduate placement. Lead in developing a plan to equip laboratories to enhance a sound postsecondary environment for technical education. Represent the School in the University Colleges of Technology Alliance, and with regional and national accrediting agencies. Interact with state and federal funding agencies in soliciting grant support. Maintain positive relationships with stakeholders of the School and College, and in developing the College’s general education curriculum consistent with evolution to the baccalaureate level, and in concert with SUNY Trustee guidelines.

Serve as an advocate for department faculty and staff and for departmentally associated students related to the achievement of institutional, School, and departmental goals. Assume some teaching responsibility, but primary role is academic leader in planning program development, fostering faculty and student development, and attaining operational objectives. Responsible for working cooperatively with many individuals --enrolled students, prospective students, departmental faculty, instructional support personnel, the College administration, other College administrative offices, and persons performing review and accreditation functions. Teach nine credit hours per semester, plus community service and industrial training. January of 1998, I completed entrepreneurial training at Cornell University and I am a certified Fast Track administrator and instructor.

During this time I have also done extensive consulting for the State Education Department as well as private publishing houses. I also developed and taught eighteen cycles of a Business Development course for individuals interested in starting and operating their own business. This course is now being taught again through ACCORD in Belmont. It has the highest success rate in the state, and the syllabus I developed is being used as the statewide model. Since August 1981 to present, I have been an active businessman in the area, operating three businesses as a sole proprietor, and started a total of eight new ventures.

The major thrust of this area was marketing, and I was responsible for the Enrollment Planning Update for Albany as well as the Operational Marketing Plan for the College. In 1986-87, I chaired the College Marketing Council and produced the Strategic Marketing Plan. In 1989 Freshman Orientation was added to my list of responsibilities.During the 1984-85 academic year, and in the 1988-89 academic year, in addition to the above responsibilities as Dean of Admissions, I taught nine hours of coursework in Business Organization and Management during the fall semester and twelve hours of coursework in Business Organization and Management and Principles of Marketing in the spring semester. This was on my own time at no additional pay.

SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor James Grillo has served in a variety of capacities at the college. He began service at ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ State as a residence hall coordinator in 1972. The following year, he moved into a full-time position in the Office of Admissions. Between 1978 and 1989, while the dean for Admissions, Records, and Financial Aid, Grillo also taught courses in the Business Technology Department as an adjunct instructor. He was hired as an associate professor in 1989, and promoted to full professor in 1992. Jim served as a vice president of the college from 1999 to 2005. From 2005 through 2009 he served a previous term as Chair of the Faculty Senate. In 2007, Grillo was promoted to his present rank of SUNY Distinguished Teaching Professor. A Marine combat veteran of Vietnam, Jim also serves as Chairman of the Veteran’s Task Force at ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ State.
Grillo holds two degrees from ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ University: a bachelor of science in business administration and a master of science in counseling and guidance. Additionally, he has completed an additional 24 graduate credit hours in educational administration through the University at Albany.
He was recognized by SUNY in 1980 with the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Professional Service, and by alumni in both 1992 and 1993 as the Business Teacher of the Year.
