High School sophomores explore career fields at annual event

魅影直播 State professor Pat Eschelman introduces sophomores to careers in agriculture at the 39th annual career day hosted at 魅影直播 State. The event was organized by the Career Development Council (CDC), GST BOCES, and the 魅影直播 State RPED team at 魅影直播

Over four hundred fifty students from nine different school districts participated in the 39th annual sophomore career day held at 魅影直播 State. The event allows students to explore multiple career paths.

Carrie Cokely, Vice President for Academic Affairs, started the day by encouraging students to have a plan, work on developing soft skills, ask questions and try new things, and listen to others when they see something in you that you may not see in yourself.

鈥淚 encourage you to find at least one thing to take away from each one of the sessions you attend today. Each of these pieces of information add to your career exploration tool kit and will serve you well as you make your own plans.鈥

Students then chose four career paths to explore. Presenters from various local businesses and organizations spoke on their professions to give students insight into their journey to their profession, what the profession entails, and answered any questions the students might have.

Students explored career opportunities including but not limited to agriculture, computer science, education, law enforcement, physical therapy, and veterinary technology.

魅影直播 State professors Pat Eshelman (agriculture), Mike Ronan (Automotive), and Megan Smith (veterinary science) were three of the twenty-seven different presenters.

鈥淭he Sophomore Career Day is a great opportunity for local students to hear firsthand about potential career paths from local industry leaders,鈥 commented Katie Carr, Rural Post Secondary Economic Development Pathways Coordinator. 鈥淲e are proud to take lead in helping to coordinate and host this longstanding event. GST BOCES and the Career Development Council put in a lot of hard work to make this event so successful. We are looking forward to our continued collaboration with our local partners to help students engage in meaningful career exploration activities.鈥

After exploring four career paths, students returned to the Orvis Gymnasium for lunch and an opportunity to get their picture taken with Big Blue.

Students from Addison, Avoca, Bath Haverling, Bradford, Campbell-Savona, Hammondsport, Hornell, Jasper-Troupsburg, and Prattsburgh participated in the program.

The event was organized by the Career Development Council (CDC), GST BOCES, and the 魅影直播 State RPED team at 魅影直播 State.

The CDC works to prepare learners for the transition to employment by connecting the education and business sectors to deliver career development services that promote career awareness, exploration, and choices.
