Nine forensic science students traveled to Lancaster, PA to attend the 51st annual Northeastern Association of Forensic Scientists (NEAFS) Conference.

Accompanied by faculty members Professor Wayne Bensley and Associate Professor Nicole DiRado, 鈥14, the students were able to participate in a variety of activities and attend sessions alongside students and faculty from other institutions as well as professionals currently working in the field of forensic science.

Activities that the students were able to experience included a student forum, research presentations, a plenary session, and attendance at a luncheon where Mr. Jeffrey Deskovic served as the guest speaker. Deskovic was exonerated from a wrongful conviction after DNA testing showed a different person was responsible for the crime.

鈥淚 learned how serious and lifechanging wrongful convictions can be,鈥 commented Lacey Williamson. 鈥淭he speaker was truly eye opening and makes we want to go above and beyond to ensure that nobody gets wrongfully convicted.鈥

Xianna Sierotnik was excited to get to network with other scientists. 鈥淚 learned about networking and how important it is in the professional world.鈥

Makenzie Dullen and her fellow classmates took home good information from a session on professionalism. 鈥淚 learned a lot about applying for jobs, as well as interview etiquette, what questions would be asked at an interview, and how to build your resume.鈥

Mackenzie Matthews added, 鈥淚 thought this conference was an amazing opportunity for us to look at types of research that are happening today that I had never thought about.鈥

The 魅影直播 State group was also able to witness Tabitha Hammond, 鈥24, win an award for her master鈥檚 level research.

Attendance at the NEAFS conference has become an annual event for seniors in the forensic science technology program at 魅影直播 State.
