Automotive Service Technician Student Equipment Lists

In addition to regular college expenses, items listed below are also required upon entering the program. It is recommended that tools and equipment be insured under homeowners' insurance policy.

All costs are calculated from a poll of current and recent students. If you have any questions, please contact the Automotive Trades Department at 607-587-3117.

Tools and Toolbox$3,000-$8,000

The cost varies vastly depending on brand and place of purchase.

  • Roller cabinet must not exceed 55 inches long by 25 inches wide and must have a lock.
  • All tool must meet OSHA standards.

Bench Units$20-120
Some of the necessary lab requirements will be performed on components that may be damaged beyond practical repair during the lab. It is recommended that the components be acquired from salvage vehicles. These components include alternators, starters, and tandem master cylinders. Students will receive information about the identification and how to obtain bench units from individual course instructors after arriving on campus.
Lab Supplies for Requirements$150
These items, such as welding rods, brake fluid, oils, etc. must be of a particular type and should not be purchased prior to arrival on campus.
Project Vehicle$500-1500

Project vehicles will be used to perform lab requirements. The vehicle should provide as much real-life, hands-on experience as possible, and should be a common make (e.g., Ford, GM, Honda, Toyota, etc). Cars/trucks should be in good running order and a 1996 or later model year. Students can also supplement their daily driver for some of the lab requirements.

A vehicle with power windows and locks are highly recommended. Due to limited lab space, large vehicles such as limousines and quad-cab, long-box trucks, may be prohibited from the labs at the discretion of the instructor.

It is not necessary that the vehicle be licensed or insured.
