Kanellis Era Begins Thursday

The Mark Kanellis era of ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ State College lacrosse begins on Thursday evening as the Pioneers battle Cayuga CC in their 2010 opener.  Kanellis will count on 13 returning players to lead the blue & gold back to the Region III Tournament.

Honors Program members with Craig ClarkCraig Clark, interim vice president for academic affairs at ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ State College, met with Honors Program members March 8 to describe his years working in Saudi Arabia. From 1982 through 1989, Clark was employed as a civil engineer at various locations in Saudi Arabia as the kingdom experienced rapid development and massive building programs.

The convocation recognizes the outstanding work of students through acknowledgement of membership in a variety of honor societies as well as the conferment of scholarships and special recognitions. More than 300 students will be honored at this year’s celebration, presided over by Craig R. Clark, ASC interim vice president for academic affairs. The welcome and introduction of keynote speaker Distinguished Alumni Award Recipient 2009 James A. Bradbury, president, Kanawha Scales & Systems, Inc., will be given by Dr. John M. Anderson, college president.

College students can buy and resell their textbooks anywhere these days, but an overwhelming number of ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ State College students choose to use the Auxiliary Campus Enterprises and Services (ACES). According to the survey respondents, 82 percent of students purchase their books from the store. ACES runs the Campus Stores at both ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ State campuses.

Pioneers Finish 14th at Swim Nationals

Both the men's and women's ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ State College swim teams finished 14th at the NJCAA National Championships held at Indian River State College in Fort Pierce, FL. The men scored 40 points in the four day competition while the women scored 7.

The ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ State College men's swim team remained in 11th place after day two of the NJCAA Naitonal Championships while the women are in 13th place.  The men now have 32 points while the women have 2 points.

÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ State College’s School of Applied Technology, Wellsville, will host the 12th annual New York State Postsecondary (college level) SkillsUSA competition Saturday, March 27, 2010. Proposed categories of competition are automotive service, CNC milling, carpentry, collision repair technology, commercial baking, computer maintenance technology, culinary, masonry, precision machining, residential wiring, technical drafting, and welding.

CRT Sponsors Competition to Raise Funds for Haiti

In its continuing effort to aid the people of Haiti, another ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ State campus group, the Campus Round Table (CRT), the central governing board for all Residence Halls on campus, sponsored a campus-wide penny wars competition. CRT members sat in front of The Terrace during the lunch rush and raised a total of $230.63.

Wilson Named All-Region

÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ State College sophomore guard Neil Wilson (Ft. Worth, TX) has been named 1st team All-Region.  Wilson led the Pioneers to a 12-18 mark and the #4 seed in the Region III Division II Tournament.  Rasean Parris (Brooklyn/Benjamin Banneker) joined Wilson on the All-WNYAC team.

Health Information Technology NYHIMA Awards

An ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ State College health information technology graduate is being honored with achievement awards in 2010.

Cheryl Wilkins, Wilson, has been awarded the New York Health Information Management Association (NYHIMA) Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement. Wilkins, who graduated from ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ State in December 2009, maintained a 3.26 grade point average (out of a possible 4.0).

÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ State College sophomores Brittney Brooks (Elmira Free) and Shawna McNeil (Hornell) have been named to the Region III Division II All-Region team.  Brooks was a 1st team selection while McNeil was a 2nd team selection.

Five members of the ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ State College indoor track & field team have earned All-Region honors based on their performances at the Region III Championships.  Pam Breedlove (Rochester/East), Bridget McMahon (Avoca), Pete Francia (Greece Olympia), John Sweeney (Barker), and Eddie Sparks (Horseheads) earned the honor.

Damrath Named Distinguished Jurist by Center for Dispute Settlement

Joseph Damrath, attorney, Hornell City judge, and associate professor at ÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ State College, has been named a Distinguished Jurist by the Center for Dispute Settlement. He was honored at a luncheon in February.

Damrath, who was among 10 candidates nominated for the award, selected by a panel of judges from the Seventh Judicial District (which includes Steuben County), was cited for using peaceful conflict resolution in his courtroom for the past 15 years, which helps in alleviating court-case backlogs.

Communications Office Captures Bronze in National Competition

÷ÈÓ°Ö±²¥ State College’s Communications Office has captured a bronze medal in the Higher Education Marketing (formerly Admissions Marketing Report) Report’s 25th annual national competition for its total recruitment package, which includes the ASC Viewbook, Applied Technology Viewbook, Road Piece, Campus Life, Financial Aid, and Athletics pieces.
